After visiting the Biltmore Estate we stopped to chat with Chris Landon of Vertical Wind. Here Chris waxes about what it takes to get it up and floating as part of his decade long mission to build the best and most fun Vertical Wind Tunnel on Earth.
Q. What is a Vertical Wind Tunnel ?
A. It is a machine that produces a vertical jet, or column of air. If this jet
is fast and large enough, a person can float. Experienced fliers can perform an
unlimited sequence of motions which can be acrobatic, or dance like. Skydivers
practice in Vertical Wind tunnels, which are also known as Skydiving or Free
Fall Simulators.
Shown below a snapshot I took at Orlando's SkyVenture some years back. Chris claims that it's one of the best operating public vertical wind chambers, that is untill his is operational.
